Success results will take time
As states and the federal government take more aggressive measures to fight the coronavirus outbreak, a laboratory in Boston, Moderna, is moving forward in creating a vaccine against the pathogen.
At the same time in Seattle, the first shots in the first vaccine trial were administered to a small group of volunteers. They have received varying doses and will continue to do so over the next several weeks, to test the safety of the experimental vaccine.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said, “Finding a safe and effective vaccine to prevent infection is an urgent public health priority. This Phase I study, launched in record speed, is an important first step toward achieving that goal.”
The rest of the world is racing toward a vaccine as well. Doctors and laboratories in Israel, Australia and various nations in Europe, as well as those in China, are sharing information with industry and academia in an effort to create a vaccine.
It is estimated that it will likely take at least a year for a COVID-19 vaccine to be approved and made available to practitioners, something pharmacy industry and government officials are looking at strongly shortening. After that, it can take a year to determine a vaccine’s effectiveness—time for the virus to return in the same or only slightly-changed strain.
